There is plenty happening with RTD and Rail travel in particular.

 

There is an extension of the Light Rail from the Mineral Station into Highland Ranch with two new stations planned.

 

You’ll want to find out about the plan for heavy rail from Union Station to DIA.

 

Find out from Kent what the projections are for finishing FasTracks on time by 2017. What about the cost?

 

Kent has lots to let you know about. Denver Union Station being developed into a regional transportation hub, 31 new Park-n-rides, six new transit corridors, and much, much more.

Unfortunately our speaker for the May Meetup, Ephraim Cruz, a Senior Patrol Agent with the United States Border Patrol for 91/2 years has been transferred back East as a reprehensive with SEIU (the Service Employees International Union and will not be able to be with us.

Ephraim Cruz served as a Senior Patrol Agent with the United States Border Patrol for 91/2 years ending in November of 2007.  Mr. Cruz will share his experiences as a Border Patrol Agent as well as his views on immigration and border security.  Mr. Cruz has been politically involved in Arizona and is currently in Colorado working with SEIU Service Employees International Union and will give us information concerning the Employee Free Choice Act.

Tabor for Dummies


TABOR.  At the mention of it, or even viewing the word, our eyes glaze over and our brains turn to mush.  Tabor, an acronym for Tax Payer Bill of Rights, is a constitutional amendment that requires Colorado to balance its budget.  But it does soooo much more. There are 6 provisions in Tabor.  We had a a wonderful intamate group and were able to have great Q and A with our speakers to find out about and understand these details.

we also, learned about the Senate Bill 228 “the 6% Solution” that would once again let our elected representatives allocate how taxpayer dollars are spent and stop the “ratcheting down” effect on our state budget.

Carol Blackard M.D., Head of the ArapaHope Community Team (ACT) Healthcare Reform group, presented a power point audience participation discussion on the fiscal realities of Healthcare in the United States. This was a revelation as to what is spent where in our health care system and how Guaranteed Universal National Healthcare can make us a healthier nation while making a significant contribution to the fiscal well being of the United States.


Senior Policy Analyst for Health Care, Cody Belzley, from Governor Ritter’s Office, was at the Meetup to explain about an exciting hospital provider fee proposal that would result in matching funds from the federal government to the state of Colorado for health care.

Dr. Irene Aguilar. Vice President of Health for all Colorado made an entertaining and informative visual presentation on the History of Health Care Insurance, The Current State of Health Insurance in Colorado, and an Alternative to Our Current Situation.

 

Our very own Colorado State HD38 Representative Joe Rice and Colorado State SD26 Senator Linda Newell attended and participated in the meeting.


December Topic: Clean Energy

 

Clean energy action

A program was presented by Clean Energy Action and two of its leaders; Leslie Glustrom and Nancy La Plaza.
Leslie Glustrom is quite expert on:  Comanche 3, Coal supplies, ALL dockets at the PUC (Public Utilities Commission), How to quickly reduce carbon, and Colorado's wind and solar potential.
Nancy LaPlaza will talk about natural gas and why we may not have as much as we'd think. We MUST plan ahead for future with less natural gas! Why LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) won't "save" us, and the problems we that accompany it such as the fact that it is very expensive and dangerous to ship. Nancy will speak to "externalities" like health effects, coal combustion wastes, mercury, acid rain, and water use;
Clean Energy Action is supporting bills in the legislature for more disclosure on electric/gas bills (amount of money spent on fuel costs v. efficiency v. renewables fee) - hearing on externalities (there are many great experts and lots of scientific data)

November Topic: Joe Rice and State Senator Elect Linda Newell offerd a special Town Hall Meeting


A special Town Hall Meeting, specifically to discuss the bills where the discussion was about what was expected during the up coming legislature session.

 

 

 

October Topic: All the Initiatives & Amendments on the 2008 Ballot plus the last Presidential Debate Watch Party


State Representative Joe discussed and answered questions about all 18 of the Amendments and Initiatives on the 2008 ballot. It was very informative and helped to educate us on all the ins and outs and impacts of the initiatives before we cast our votes. The Debate Watching Party of the last Presidential Debate.  The evening was fun and informative.

 

 

September Topic: SAFE Initiative & Amendment 51 Coalition to End Colorado's Wait List

 

Kelly Stahlman addressed the Coalition to end Colorado’s Wait List. Amendment 51 provides new funding for much-needed services that people with developmental disabilities and their families need now and in the future.

 

A representative from the SAFE campaign came and talked to us about initiative 59 saving for education.

 

Betty Harris and Donovan O’Dell spoke to the group on how important it was to contribute time and/or money to our local, state and national campaigns if we are to have our democratic candidates win in order to represent us.

 

Jim Jackman let us all know how important the county commissioner is in our daily lives and how we are affected by the decisions made by the County commissioner.

 

Kent Bagley is running for RTD Board in district H. Kent let us know the important issues that the RTD board will be resolving in this next term. Kent shared with us his qualifications for the position. Kent is currently serving as the Chair of the Littleton Planning Commission and has over two decades of experience as a developmental planner in some of the metro area’s most challenging projects.

 

July Topic: Clean, Renewable Energy for Colorado

 

We had Leslie Glustrom of Clean Energy Action, a local Colorado group that educates and focuses citizen attention on issues that affect us locally and globally. Leslie talked about clean, renewable energy and how it can help our economy by creating jobs while helping our environment also. She gave a wonderful presentation and we had a great deal of questions and answer. Local candidates talked about where they stand on these issues too. It was incredibly educational and gave everyone a better understanding of or energy situation.

Our previous meeting was Monday, June 16th, 2008 at 7 pm we had a educational and fun experience. We were honored and like to thank our wonderful speakers.

Representative Morgan CARROLL (D-Aurora) now running for Colorado State Senate in SD29.

Need to support and voice after the elections to be sure that citizens voice are heard over the lobbyists. Stay informed, participate and testify.

Heather Lurie from the White House Project (a bipartisan non-profit organization for the advancement of women in leadership rolls in all communities and sectors.) Spoke on the subject of women in politics. For more information see link in "Organization links" below

A.J. Clemmons, a candidate in our own district for CU Regent. Spoke on the challenges facing higher education in Colorado.
